"Romance is the glamour which turns the dust of everyday life into a golden haze."

― Elinor Glyn

Truly, love is an eternal feeling that binds us. Being one of the most beautiful feelings, it is celebrated through various gestures, gifts, and momentos. To commemorate it, Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14th. What separates it from other occasions is that it never comes alone. In its train, it brings 7 special days- Rose Day, Propose Day, Chocolate Day, Teddy Day, Promise Day, Hug Day, and Kiss Day.  Throughout this week-long love festival, people exchange gifts, flowers, and chocolates in the name of St. Valentine after whom the Day is christened. But who is this saint, and from where did these traditions spring? Explore this account that highlights history of Valentine’s Day and have your queries answered.

Valentine's Week
Several legends are cited for origin of Valentine’s Day. However, the most accepted one is about a saint who believed in love and used to help people marry. Even though, it was unlawful for men to wed during those times because Claudius II believed bachelors are the best soldiers for his army. When the saint’s illegal act was discovered, he was executed. Another popular legend states that he sent a love letter to his beloved while awaiting execution. Thus, the day of love is baptized after his name – Valentine. Soon, St. Valentine emerged to be the most popular saint in England and France. As he was martyred on February 14, 270 AD, people commemorate love in his name on 14th February.

Fast forward to the fifteenth century. Valentine’s Day was combined with the penchant of sending handwritten love notes. Much later, the fondness to exchange cards, chocolates, and flowers was witnessed everywhere. And this day transformed into a 7-day celebration with different tokens and expressions of love. Here you go with a quick glance at each of these-

Rose Day, 7th February - This day marks the beginning of Valentine’s week. Accepting love with words was not easy for lovers. Thus, they started giving hints of their feelings to their beloveds with this prime symbol of love.
Propose Day, 8th February – After the beloved accepts the rose, lover now accepts his/her profound feelings. Using various Valentine’s Day ideas, people propose their beloveds to love and live together.
Chocolate Day, 9th February- As chocolate is considered ‘Love Drug’ lovers consider it imperative to exchange it after their love is reciprocated. Proven scientifically, serotonin-related effects of chocolates enhance the sense of closeness between lovers. Any other reason required now?
Teddy Day, 10th February- As teddy bears are cute, couples find these best to exchange. The soft toy reminds love-birds of the other person’s love. When they are apart, the other one can hold it, and feel the beloved close.
Promise Day, 11th February – To assure their beloved of their true love, lovers considered it necessary to seal it with a heartfelt promise. Thus, Promise Day emerged where couples pledge to stay together and love each other. Today, people exchange promise rings as a token of promise.
Kiss Day, 12th February – Ah! Those butterflies in the stomach! This day of Valentine’s week 2016, and every year is awaited with a mix of nervousness and thrill. As lovers want to express their emotions without a word or item, they find ‘kissing’ the best. When the pairs of lips touch each other, the sparks of love convey their passion towards each other.
Hug Day, 13th February – All said and done by now. Lovers want to be in each other’s arms. Thus, they resort to hug, and feel the warmth and purity of their love.
